Mrs Gordon, Miss Beynon and Mrs Jones welcome you

to Dosbarth Menai/Year 1.


Things your child will need in Year 1 :

  • Pair of black velro pumps for use in the classroom and around school,
  • PE kit - white shorts & t-shirt,
  • Book bag,
  • Coat - all through the year whatever the weather, this allows us to enjoy the outdoors whenever,
  • Water bottle.

Please ensure that all items are clearly labelled with your childs name.


Healthy snack is £1.50 a week and should be sent in to school on a Monday in a clearly labelled envelope.


Please ensure you have signed up to our Seesaw page using the QR codes sent home to see the most recent updates for your child as they begin their journey in Year 1. (If you have misplaced your QR code please let us know asap and we will send a copy home.)


Our PE sessions are on a Wednesday & Friday and can I remind you that no jewellery is allowed including pierced earrings and should be removed at home.

Autumn Term 2018

Dosbarth Menai - Year 1

Language, Literacy & Communication

Speaking for different audiences across the curriculum and improving Oracy, Focus on listening skills. To use Read Write Inc sessions to improve letter formation, develop bank of sounds and reading strategies. To develop range of writing styles through a range of topic based activities such as fact files & instructional writing. Spelling simple words using phonic decoding. Reading: individually and during group reading sessions. Literacy focus: Traditional Tales, Learning logs and HFW checks.

Mathematical Development

Recognising numbers 1-20 and their correct formation, recognising relationship between tens and units, ordering 2-digit numbers, number bonds to 10, mental addition and subtraction, Coin recognition, finding one more or one less than a given number, counting forwards and backwards, 2D shapes and their properties, days of the week, months of the year & seasons. Positional language.

Knowledge & Understanding of the world

Our topic for the Autumn term is ‘Traditional Tales’ we will be focusing on science experiments following our traditional tales theme and much more.

Personal & Social Development, Well Being & Cultural Diversity

Our focus this term follows Jenny Mosley’s well known circle times looking at feelings and friendship aswell as developing speaking and listening skills. Children will learn about how everyone is unique and special. We will also look at a variety of different celebrations such as Diwali, Harvest & Christmas.


Following Fflic a Flac scheme of work. Looking at days of the week, months

of the year, identifying basic classroom resources and using the welsh language to ask questions and respond to them. Numbers 1-20.

 Creative Development

Creating traditional tales artwork both in and outdoors. Identifying, tasting and making foods from different cultures. Traditional crafts for a variety of celebrations. Singing in tune, keeping a steady rhythm. Christmas Concert.


Generate pictures and label them. Use Maths whizz and Teach your monster to read online resources. Search the www for information.
